History:

  • Ann Arbor was founded in 1824 by John Allen of Virginia and Elisha Rumsey of New York. 640 acres of oak forest along the Huron River formed the original site of the city.
  • Most stories about the origin of the city's name refer to the wives of the founders, Ann Allen and Mary Ann Rumsey. One of the more credible ones is that John Allen could not decide between "Allensville" and "Annapolis", but that his wife preferred "Annarbour".
  • Since the opening of the University of Michigan in the city in 1841, Ann Arbor has become known as one of the major education centers of the world.
  • Ann Arbor is also known for healthcare, as patients come from all over the world to be treated at the Univeristy of Michigan Health System. Between U of M and St. Joseph Mercy Hospital, Ann Arbor has more doctors per capita than almost every other city on the country.
