The village of Whitmore Lake is located on the southwestern shore of the 667-acre lake.
Local residents have discussed incorporating the village on many occasions, but have not yet chosen to do so.
Until the 1950's the lake was used almost exclusively by local residents.
By 1959, however, one survey found that 30% of the anglers came from elsewhere in Michigan.
