History:
The settlement of Woodruff's Grove was established in 1823 just south of where an ancient Indian trail crossed the Huron River. This was the first village in Washtenaw County.
In 1825 settlers Augustus Woodward, John Stewart and William Harwood combined portions of their own land (just north of Woodruff's Grove) to form the settlement of Ypsilanti.
The village was named after General Demetrius Ypsilanti, a Greek patriot.
Woodruff's Grove was later abandoned in favor of Ypsilanti, when a fire destroyed the school there.
Home of Michigan Normal School (now Eastern Michigan University) since 1849, Ypsilanti has also been a major manufacturing center for decades.
