Highways:
Primary highway access to Washtenaw County is via 3 expressways: I-94, US-23, and M-14.
I-94 runs E-W through the county, as part of its route between Detroit and Chicago. Sometimes referred to as "Michigan's Main Street", I-94 was the first freeway completed in the county. Originally part of old US-12, the last segment opened in 1960.
US-23 runs N-S through the county, as part of one of the major routes between Ohio and northern Michigan. Originally designated a U.S. highway in 1925, the final freeway segment opened in the county in 1962.
M-14 was completed as a freeway in 1979, designed to relieve congestion on I-94 between Ann Arbor and the western suburbs of Detroit. It is rumored that this may eventually be redesignated I-394.
